Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
So lets take a closer look at the famous follow me car itself. From the outside it definitely stands out with its black and yellow checkered paint job. That‘s the primary reason, to stand out from all other ground vehicles. On the roof you have a set of antennas to receive data link messages and to be able to communicate on all airport frequencies. Then the large infamous „Follow me“ sign which the driver controls from his dashboard and another feature you‘ll see in minute. Some follow me cars have extra bright lights mounted on their roof or bonnet to light up the taxiway or runway during night time operation.
Inside the car, the dashboard with the associated switches. A traffic screen to send and receive messages from dispatch and the mentioned radio to listen to given clearances. Besides standard safety equipment like a fire extinguisher, first aid kit etc. the car comes with an extra set of wheel chocks and these handheld wands, but more about in a minute.
But the primary purpose for what the Follow-Me car is best known for is of course, hence the name „Follow me“. So guiding airplanes around the apron and the taxiways, to or from active runways. If a Follow-Me car is requested upon landing, the driver, who is called a marshaller, will be notified by one of the air traffic controllers in the tower, either on a separate radio frequency or via data link messaging to his monitor. Once he receives and confirms the order, he positions his car where the arriving cockpit crew can see it best once they exit the runway. Then monitors the active ground frequency and waits for you to receive your taxi clearance. Once you’ve read back your clearance only then will the driver turn on his beacon and the “Follow me” sign and expects you to keep up with him and match his speed. Some of the of Follow me signs have arrows which will flash up once the driver uses his indicator, signaling the pilot that a turn can be expected and second now. Some also have a trigger in the handbrake, switching the follow me instructions to Stop!
But see more in the video ...
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

Huh… I imagine with the massive amounts of lift that the U2 can generate (necessary to fly so high up), that it could absolutely land at the speed a fast car can get up to.

Thank you for this video! @Captain Joe, Since you're based in Luxemburg, you've probably visited Saarbrücken? Have you been at the airport there (probably not with the 747 ;-) )? Funny thing is... as often as I've been at EDDR, there was always the follow me car. And the funny part about this is.. the airport has one runway (for jets), one taxi way and like two apron parking stands. Still always the follow me car 😂😂😂 I find that very hilarious because at big airports like EDDF I barely see a follow me car....

Never experienced a follow me car, at our field it’s use the only inbound taxiway, pick some empty grass in front of the hangar, try to avoid the bat shit crazy helis that will try to land on you for no apparent reason, and leave it there 🤣
Күн мурунWhiteWulfe
I'd never heard of or seen such vehicles, however the instant it was described it kind of had that typical "oh, that just makes sense then" that a lot of aspects of aviation have. I have found myself behind standard airport vehicles in the past though - as the coffee delivery guy! First time on a taxiway in a Ford Transit is an interesting experience!

I used to work as a Marshaller. I remember my first night shift with low visibility. I was terryfied, i couldn't see what was in front of me, it was like 50m visibility. Great that you mention what marshaller is doing on the airport. You should decode all marshaller signs, because most of the GA pilots don't know what we want them to do.

I've provided a follow me service a few times. I was an airport reporting officer and works safety officer for a small regional airport (YWSL). We were under going mager upgrades and some taxiways were closed. While the nearby military base provided air traffic control for the area, my airport has no tower and as such there is no ground control. Enter the pilots who got a little lost and my plain white utility vehicle with only amber beacon lights and a radio to guide them to their parking. Not a service normally operated at such a small airport, but necessary at the time due to contruction works which I was supervising.

Morning Joe, brilliant video as always! At our airport we also use follow me cars on particular taxiways that don't have any taxiway lighting. If we haven't got taxiway edge and centerline lights during hours of official darkness or LVP's, a follow me will be mandatory to comply with the aerodrome license / manual and regulatory regulations.

Captain Joe, you’re the best!!!! From Chicago O’Hare, and Executive Tower. I agree that we need more follow me cars in Chicago! How do we get that in the books? Our winters and outdoor roads & rough and dangerous (Most of the time) You would think that we have a decent amount of emergency vehicles 8-0

Kind of ironic that pilots are able to fly all around the world at almost the speed of sound, being responsible for the safety of hundreds of passengers and hundreds of tons of metal which costs millions of dollars to replace and are trained to handle all kinds of unexpected failures that may ouccur somewhere over the pacific ocean, but after a successful manual crosswind landing the most challenging part of the flight exceeds their capabilities and cannot be completed without assistance: The apron. Two pilots are unable to read a map and follow yellow lines and signs, while being guided via radio to their destination. So many turns, left - and right, without prior warning by a flashing arrow sign in front of them? no way!

I wonder if the local taxpayers know they paid for a $500,000 Lamborghini when a $20,000 Fiat 500 would do the job just as well. If that happened in my area, the local airport commissioners would be kicked out of office.
