19:33 I had the opposite reaction: while others were memorizing anatomical nomenclature to be doctors or writing subjective papers to be lawyers, I walked away understanding how nature works at a fundamental level in one of the most exciting eras in science (the birth of GR and QM) 21:49 It's true. My advisor told me I should drop out of my honours degree in the 1st year due to my lower math scores. I obviously refused (you mean to say I can't study the coolest subjects in physics?) but did find it hard in truly understanding some concepts in advanced physics... Tensor algebra anyone? 24:58 I think every scientist feels they have something to contribute in their lifetime. 34:58 Godel solved Einstein's Eqn's in such a way to show that, in such a universe, you could travel back in time simply by walking a certain path. 51:39 I don't have that hole that so many others have. I think a sufficient understanding of nature through science helps answer that deep question. 1:08:12 I think Hofstadter's interpretation of consciousness has a lot to offer. It may just be too ahead of its time. 1:16:11 I wish I could express my thoughts as clearly as Brian. The trail of intellectual breadcrumbs he leaves is just a masterful example at engaging skeptics and letting them re-evaluate beliefs based on new data without being defensive. 2:05:27 Professor Greene explains it so well. It's kind of like how old songs of slavery can unite black people in that collective sense of suffering. It doesn't necessarily mean that the source (religion/slavery) is a good thing. I just like how he clearly separates religion with the anthropological consequences/benefits.

College students who claim to be religious know what answers to put down on their tests. Those answers have nothing to do with their beliefs. Paraphrased from Richard Dawkins. Keep Creationism and all that follows out of the public education sphere. It belongs inside the church.

Brian didn't have an abnormal admiration for math as a kid you had regular admiration for your father and because he was such a good father he introduced you to the stuff he likes so it made you want to bind and impress him with how you liked it. The same thing happened with my daughter when I seen she was so into video games at 4 but then i realized she was into them because i was into them. Now we both read each weeknight and tell each other about the galaxy and weird science. She is 9 now but she loves what I love because kids idolize their parents. Sure they grow out of it but if the seed of love and knowledge is their they will pursue it in their lives. Idk just an idiots opinion on child development. Its a shame most kids don't have much interest outside of YouTube and video games now because their parents are non existent and checked out they let screens raise their kids. I ses it first hand. My daughter's soccer team had to stop playing because not enough kids would show up constantly and it broke my heart to see all these young girls with no roles models and no structure just drifting in a sea of loneliness and light up at the smallest amount of attention so they act bad to get that attention even if it's negative attention. Kids crave structure and responsibility even if they don't show it.

If we are all made of “star stuff” and stars are a “pocket” where entropy isn’t necessarily increasing in the same way it is around us, could it be possible that stars themselves are sentient beings the same way we are, but they understand things on such a cosmically greater scale that we can’t comprehend it or communicate with them?

Love how Brian greene puts things into context, when he gets onto a problem that hasn’t yet been answered, he explains all the current theories in a way that’s relatively easy to comprehend, when more than one theory is still on the table he says we simply don’t know yet, he doesn’t try to fabricate something that might not be true.

He's being very generous when he says "the average person can only name a couple of scientists, but that's okay because we have this body of work and insights which are more important than the people who made them". People who struggle to conjure the names Darwin, or Faraday, or Curie, for instance, tend to be just as ignorant about evolution, electricity, gravity and so on. If he is arguing that it's okay for the "average person" to be ignorant about basic principles of how the universe works, then I disagree.

Great podcast. I think that the psychedelic experience Dr. Greene describes that he had in Amsterdam could be an entry for him to move away from the standard scientific reductionist paradigm he espouses. The personal terrifying experience he describes that he had is actually a possible method aliens could "experience" human life on earth. I think that this experience would be something for Dr. Greene to re-examine more closely to find out why he was so terrified. It is a challenge to his materialist outlook. Joe Rogan you have the best job.
