He did criticised other companies for not participating in the negotiations with oxford university, but it felt abit weird. I live in Canada (US citizen) and my elderly neighbor was complaining about how the homeless are being housed in hotels. Along the lines of they don't work and they get to live it up. My response was, "They are homeless. It is easy for us to stay home and shelter cause we have a place to live. In N. America we don't care for our homeless population as we should. Not to be a bit of a downer, and again, I agree with just about everything in this, and there DEFINITELY is some skullduggery at hand, there IS and he DOES have a very legitimate reason for wanting AstraZaneca to manufacture the drug: Vaccine skepticism. If people believe vaccines are being made by any tom-dick-and-harry or some fly-by-night startup or some barely-above-the-board or other hyphenated word combination to imply something that is less-trustworthy than the massive, cleanroom manufacturing facilities of 1st-world factories, there will be a massive hit to credibility that we are ALREADY suffering. Again, VERY good content, agree that the Gates' foundations interests in AstraZaneca are shaisty, but also...like...he DOES care, and his foundation makes a VERY good point about how optics and reputation DO matter, at least, in THIS specific case. Again, I am kinda pro-B&MG foundation, but I am so knowing they have some pretty negative outcomes (looking at you education funding). IMO the credibility thing was actually really compelling as an argument on why, at least with this COVID vaccine, its important that the optics are very robust.

Its worth mentioning that this problem is ENTIRELY SOLVED if states owned the factories that produced vaccines and they were not corporate interests as the credibility of the vaccine would be tied to the state's manufacturing facility and ability to disburse it in a humanitarian capacity and not the vaccine's "market viability" beholden to profit-seeking corporate interests...

Our mental health system is fucked up because our overall healthcare system is fucked up, and all those mental health initiatives will go nowhere until all healthcare (including mental healthcare) is free at point of service and available to all, so it won't be segmented by insurance jurisdictions.

However there is one big simple genetic difference. White folks have less melanin and more sun conversion of vitamin D2 into D3. There is well-documented evidence of much worse COVID-19 infection outcomes with low vitamin D3 levels and some good evidence of the interaction of D3 with not only the infectivity of the virus, but also reduction in the body's inflammatory response during and after the infection. People of color generally have less opportunity to convert D2 into D3. Poorer people have less access to medical eval and advice, which could advice appropriate D3 supplementation to narrow this gap. -Unfortunately, in health care, especially during times of medical crisis like now, patients who take more time and supply will be segregated. Folks with behavioral issues take many more times the staff to prevent self harm. A large segment of behavioral pathology comes from cognitive issues (think dementia). Most health care workers will do there best to provide good care to these folks, but with the minority of unscrupulous health care workers, and those that are too overwhelmed to be able to evaluate their actions, difficult patients will receive unacceptable care. Disciplining these health care workers alone does not address the issue of unavailable time, staff, energy, and supply. The most vulnerable will always be hit with this until we increase the available staff and supply.

I'm all in favor of more equitable distribution of the vaccine but this reporting is a little disingenuous. The reason the gates foundation convinced oxford to not make it open source was because they knew that if one lab made a mistake and disseminated a defective vaccine people would be scared to take the vaccine especially in developing nations where misinformation can be much harder to fight. They have experience trying to eradicate disease through vaccines and through their experience found that a lot of places have a huge fear of vaccines. Also the US new source siting the AstraZeneca vaccine was purposely slowed down to increase profits. Only says there were manufacturing problems and they weren't able to produce the quantities they had promised. I agree there should have been a promise that the vaccine would be sold at cost but I wasn't privy to those negotiations and maybe that was a deal breaker because manufacturing the vaccine is a brand new science and has many unexpected set backs which could be very expensive.

I just realized that pharma companies, that make vaccines, will heavily profit off of the existence of anti vaxxers for years, possibly decades. If we would vaccinate everyone within a year or two, we could starve Covid out of existence. However if a large enough amount of people refuses the vaccine, they will act as a reservoir for the virus, reinfecting the vaccinated population after the vaccine effects wear of. This means while pharma companies can only sell the vaccine to the (roughly) half of the population, because the other half doesn't want it, they can sell it to them over and over and over again. Not sure year long reoccuring profits to pharma companies is exactly what anti vaxxers are aiming for, but that is certainly what they will achieve.

AstraZeneca pledged to make their COVID-19 vaccine at no profit for the duration of the pandemic.
